RA17 Series Valve Complement

I have been asked on several occasions what valves to expect in an RA17, 17L or 117.


To attempt to answer that question, I have compiled the table on the right. It should be pointed out that this is NOT a table of compatibles. For such a table, see the next page.


Some RA17Ls may not have the AVC clamp-diode, V24 fitted. Instead this may be a semiconductor (1N916), which depending on the age of the receiver may be located on the third tag-board in the 100KHz IF module or mounted between a tag on the second tag-board and a tag on one of the divider plates.


Valve-wise, the RA17W is identical to the RA17L.


In the RA117A, V24 is not fitted. A 1N916 is fitted instead.


The RA117E does have V24 fitted but actually has a transistor in the AVC circuit!


* Note: Early RA17s used a GZ33 rectifier. This was found to be unsatisfactory and was eventually replaced with the ubiquitous GZ34. As far as I am aware, this substitution occurred prior to the RA17MKII.
